Totoro Crochet Tutorial & Free Pattern
Totoro! This is one of my favorite designs and I wanted to share it with the world. Here is my Totoro crochet tutorial and free pattern. Learn how to make each part of the toy – from the moon to the clouds and the star of the show Totoro.

MATERIALS
- 2,5mm crochet hook (You can use smaller or bigger crochet hook depending on your yarn)
- White, Grey, Violet, Yellow, Green (I used YarnArt Jeans – colors 79, 67, 80, 62, 19)
- Yarn needle for sewing
- Fiberfill
- Scissors
- Stitch marker
- Pins
- Black thread for the eyes
STITCHES
- st = stitch
- Magic circle
- sc = single crochet
- inc = increase (two single crochet in one stitch)
- dec = decrease (crochet two stitches together)
- F/O = finish off
- Sl st = slip stitch
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ch = chain
MOON
Use violet yarn.
When you start the magic circle leave a long tail because you are going to use it later for sewing.
R1: 24sc into magic circle (24)
Don’t close the gap.
R2: *sc in the next st, inc* (36)
R3: *sc in the next 2st, inc* (48)
R4: *sc in the next 3st, inc* (60)
R5: *sc in the next 4st, inc* (72)
R6: *sc in the next 5st, inc* (84)
R7: *sc in the next 6st, inc* (96)
R8: *sc in the next 7st, inc* (108)
R9: sc around (108)
R10: *sc in the next 8st, inc* (120)
R11: *sc in the next 9st, inc* (132)
R12: sc around (132)
Sl st and F/O leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the bottom of the moon with a yarn needle for sewing and hide the yarn inside.
Proceed to the other end of the moon. Sew the top of the moon but leave a small opening for stuffing.
Stuff the moon very firmly and close up the gap.
TOTORO
Use grey color yarn.
R1: 6sc into a magic cirlce (6)
R2: *sc in the next st, inc* (9)
R3: *sc in the next 2st, inc* (12)
R4: *sc in the next 3st, inc* (15)
R5: *sc in the next 4st, inc* (18)
R6: *sc in the next 5st, inc* (21)
R7 – R9: sc around (21)
R10: *sc in the next 6st, inc* (24)
R11 – R15: sc around (24)
R16: *sc in the next 2st, dec* (18)
R17: *sc in the next st, dec* (12)
Stuff firmly with fiber fill.
R18: dec around (6)
F/O and cut the yarn. Grab your yarn needle for sewing and weave the ends of the last row and close the gap.
TOTORO EARS
Use grey color yarn.
R1: 4sc into a magic circle (4)
R2 – R3: sc around (4)
R4: *sc, inc* (6)
F/O and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.
Make 2.
TOTORO BELLY
Use white color yarn.
R1: 6sc into a magic circle (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: *st, inc* (18)
R4: sc, *inc, sc in the next 2st* x6 (24)
Sl. st. and F/O and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.
TOTORO ARMS
Use white gray yarn.
R1: 6sc into a magic circle (6)
R2 – R3: sc around (6)
Sl. st. and F/O and cut the yarn leaving a long tail for sewing.
LEAF
Use green color.
R1: ch7
R2: from the 2nd ch from the hook work, sc, hdc, dc x2, hdc, sc, proceed to the other side, sc, hdc, dc x2, hdc, sc (12)
Sl. st. and F/O and leave a long tail for sewing.
STAR
Use yellow color.
R1: in a magic circle place ch 2, sc in 2nd ch, sl. St.
Pull magic circle closed.
Repeat 4 times.
CLOUDS
SMALL CLOUD
Use white yarn. Make 5.
R1: 6sc into a magic circle (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: *sc, inc* (18)
R4: sc around (18)
R5: *sc, dec* (12)
Place fiberfill.
R6: dec around (6)
Place more fiberfill.
Sl. st. and F/O weaving the yarn tail into the last row.
BIG CLOUD
Use white yarn. Make 4.
R1: 6sc into a magic circle (6)
R2: inc around (12)
R3: *sc, inc* (18)
R4: *sc in the next 2st, inc* (24)
R5 – R6: sc around (24)
R7: *sc in the next 2st, dec* (18)
R8: *sc, dec* (12)
Place fiberfill.
R9: dec around (6)
Place more fiberfill.
Sl. st. and F/O weaving the yarn tail into the last row.
